Gas Savings

Calculate your gas MPG

Want to know your automobile’s fuel consumption, but don’t have one of those built-in mile/gallon gizmos in your car? Here’s one way of calculating your gas mileage:

  1. Fill the gas tank to the top, beings careful not to let it overflow. The safest way is to let the automatic nozzle of the gas pump decide - when the trigger releases, it’s full;
  2. Immediately make a note of your exact mileage or set the odometer to zero (0);
  3. When you again have to get gas, fill it up to the max as before, AND note the exact GALLONS of gas pumped;
  4. Immediately, take an exact mileage reading and calculate the DISTANCE driven by subtracting the initial odometer reading (step 2) from the new one. Or just write down the mileage (DISTANCE) on the trip odometer if you reset it to zero in step 2.

Now you can calculate your mileage/gallon (MPG) as follows:

MPG = DISTANCE (step 4) divided by GALLONS (step 3)

Or use this handy MPG calculator:

Miles Per Gallon Calculator
This calculator will compute your car’s Miles Per Gallon and forecast
your gasoline expense for one month and for one year. It also allows you to see how much
money you would save if you were driving a car that got better gas mileage.

Once you’ve made your first MPG calculation, use that as a benchmark to try and reduce your fuel consumption (and increase your gas savings!). Have a look at the gas savings tips elsewhere on our website for some good ideas.

Of course your MPG will vary according to factors such as driving conditions, your driving style, etc. But you get the idea …

Gas Savings Tips

Fill your tank at the coolest time of day. Fuel is denser when it’s cool in the early morning or late night.. Your engine consumes fuel by weight but gas pumps dispense fuel by volume. The colder the fuel is when you pump it, the more of it you get for the same money.
